We welcome anyone! Regardless of experience or talent, you can make the team. We hold tryouts to see who will make varsity or JV and who wants to commit to the team. (See our team tryout policies below).
Tryouts begin Monday, 2/26, 4:00 p.m.
Practice: Come dressed and ready to train. Wear sweatpants, sweatshirts, hats and gloves. Dress warm. Bring water. You can peel off layers after the warmup. No one comes in just shorts or t-shirts. You can change clothes in the locker rooms in the main school before coming over the field on SE 30th and Powell Blvd.
Please arrive 10 minutes early to store your bag in the field house. Bags stored in the field house are “at your own risk,” this room is unsupervised. We will be locking field house 4:00 to 5:30 daily. Each day will begin with a team meeting at 4:00 p.m. Please find a place on the main bleachers for the team meeting. Training will follow with a team general warm up before we break into specific events.
Newcomers, or those of you not certain if T&F is for you:
Cleveland T&F offers plenty of fun and lots of opportunity to grow and improve. You will become a better athlete -- faster, stronger, fitter. You’ll learn under the guidance of remarkable coaches, enjoy the camaraderie and full support of your team, and discover the deep satisfaction of reaching your goals.
Eligibility: You cannot practice if you do not show as approved on familyID. If the eligibility column is blank, our AD office is still verifying your eligibility. If it reads “not approved,” you likely have not successfully submitted an up to date physical (a physical within the last two years successfully uploaded via a jpeg or pdf format). Please confirm you are cleared on familyID. If you need help, contact our Athletic Department Office.
Dressing for the weather: T&F is only canceled for lightning. Learn to dress appropriately for wind, rain, cold, heat and sun. Wear running shoes. Sprinters and Jumpers will need spikes as well.
Tryouts and commitment: Athletes, choose your level of commitment:
- Squad practices everyday, Monday through Friday. (If you want to make the varsity team, choose Gold).
- GREEN Squad practices Monday through Thursday. (If you approach T&F more casually, choose Green).
- If you miss practice unexcused 2 or more times, you cannot participate in the subsequent T&F meet.
- If you miss practice unexcused 3 or more times, you cut yourself from the team.
- If you anticipate an excused absence (due to illness, appointment, or another activity like the school play or another sport), communicate with your event coach when you will be absent and why. Use the chat on the Teamapp.
- If you are in school, you come to practice.
- The GOLD squad or GREEN squad — choose your level of commitment. You can always later petition your coach to move to the Gold squad.
Teamapp: Both parents and athletes sign up. We take attendance via the app and communicate via the app (you can send us messages and we send you updates).
Expectations:
- Arrive on time (3:50 p.m.) ready to play
- Come dressed for the workout and weather
- Carry a positive attitude with a willingness to learn
- Put forth effort and receive coaching.
- Treat teammates, and competition with respect and support -- indicated by positive language, interactions, and habits
- Honor “No Use” agreements and respect your health.
- Meet academic & attendance Standards
- We support each other at T&F meets. We line the curve on the 4x400 Relay, our last event, thank our competition and end with a short (less than 5 min) meeting.
- In meets, athletes do at least one event for themselves and one for the team.
- We hold each other to our very best, on and off the field.
Track & Field events in Oregon high school meets include:
Javelin, Shot Put, Discus
High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault

We will hold a “spike night” (with discounts) at Foot Traffic on Saturday March 2ndfrom 10:00am to 5:00pm. Pole Vaulters, Throwers and Jumpers -- talk to your coach about what kind of spikes to purchase.
